Managing Director/CEO, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)
At the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), our airports under my leadership, are more than just terminals; they are gateways to dreams and opportunities. On May 5, 2025, we demonstrated this commitment by warmly welcoming Tunde Onakoya and the Chess for Slums Africa team back to Nigeria at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. Their return followed a successful participation at the 12th Annual Chess & Community Conference in the United States.
This event was not merely a homecoming; it symbolized the victory of determination, talent, and the resilient Nigerian spirit. We at FAAN, led by the vision of [suspicious link removed], were honored to celebrate their achievements.
Our decision to celebrate the team aligns with FAAN’s mission to support initiatives that promote excellence and opportunity. Tunde Onakoya’s Chess for Slums Africa initiative has proven how nurturing talent can transform lives. These young chess players, from Majidun in Ikorodu, competed against global peers and returned as champions.
In recognizing diverse forms of success, FAAN believes intellectual achievement deserves equal celebration. As Mr. Gbenga Olorunpomi, Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, stated, “It’s not only football that should be celebrated. We must honor brilliance in all forms. These children have made Nigeria proud.”
The reception at Murtala Muhammed International Airport was organized by FAAN leadership, including the Regional Manager for South West Airports and the Airport Manager for MMIA, and featured:
A cultural performance with talking drums and traditional dance.
A photo opportunity with a custom stand for the team to display their medals and trophies.
Gift bags with FAAN memorabilia for each champion.
Jamiu, a gold medalist from the UN Games, shared, “Every game I play, I play it to win…for me, chess is not just a game, it’s an opportunity.” His story, from a roadside mechanic to a global chess champion, underscores the power of access and opportunity.
Tunde Onakoya emphasized, “Talent is universal, opportunity is not.” This reflects FAAN’s belief in providing access not just to destinations, but to opportunity and dignity.
FAAN, under [suspicious link removed], is dedicated to promoting inspiring stories and building a culture of recognition within aviation and beyond. We support initiatives that align with our values of excellence, empowerment, and national pride.
The story of Chess for Slums Africa is now a part of Nigeria’s story. These champions show that greatness can emerge from anywhere, and FAAN is proud to support their journey.
Welcome back, champions.
